Goodbye Bhutan… for now

Our trip to Bhutan is finished but the acquaintance with this marvelous country has just started. May it be different in the place where all what we had only dreamed about came to our hands at once? Got sore throats after couple of cold nights and windy days in the mountains, asked our guide to find the pharmacy and the next hour we stopped on the mountain pass to buy strange root from the old woman (it was the only medicine she had). You know, it was the most effective thing from sore throat we’ve ever tried. Chatted about studying in traditional medicine college and met the Minister of Education...

Happiness is a place

High in the Himalayas’ mountainsides small buddhists kingdom squeezed between two giant neighbors. Local government refused the worldwide method of evaluating of country’s well-being - GDP, and created their own system that is known as Gross National Happiness (GNH). Not long ago Bhutan was covered by the shadow of medieval ages. About 50 years before there were neither roads no total electrification; Internet and TV appeared in 2000th; the parliament system was launched in 2008 with the strong effort from the top: it was presented by His Majesty Fifth King and the need for national voting...

Tracking The Eagle Hunter in Mongolia

..Night: two strangers approach a yurt. Steppe, salt lake, hundreds of kilometers of no roads behind. We ask for a permission to built out tent alongside. A Mongolian says NO And adds: the night will be very very cold. Pauses. Friendly, but at the same time insistently offers to stay at his yurt - there is a fire heated by dried excrements. Our modesty was not considered – we’ve slept warmly, and the landlords spent their night in non - heated shed aside. That forced us to appreciate this large country and come back once again. This time it is North-West part of Mongolia where 2000 year old traditions...

Winter with Icelandic Horse

In the winter of 2014 we chose to explore Iceland.  Due to harsh weather conditions, our truck got to Iceland few weeks later than planned. Unpredictable weather met us with strong winds and less than 6hrs of daylight but the warm welcome of Icelanders brightened our days there. Behind the Polar Circle, behind the civilization: Diupkun and Harpich

After one week in Chirinda, we moved further North and away from civilization. To reach Oleg's hunting hut by snowmobiles, we had to cross woods, a few hills, frozen rivers and lakes. It's been 30 years, since Oleg started to live and hunt by the Diupkun lake. "I'm not killing, I'm producing", - he explains about hunting. Firstly, he lived there with his family. Now only his helpers come to live and work with him. All of them have their duties and responsibilities. When not working, they either smoke and drink tea or sit quietly in the hut and think about something. They look like meditating...

Tura – Cherenda. Beautiful Taiga

We were offline for one moth and couldn't share our pictures, but we're coming back to civilization and here are some of the moments from the last month. After a nice stay in Tura we continued on going North. After a few days drive on "zemnyk", we reached Cherenda, a small village of a few hundred people. On the way, we survived the temperature of -56°C and a few more truck failures: we lost oil from the engine, and some other serious problems appeared. But Northern lights appeared unexpectedly and made us forget all the bugs, that didn't let us enjoy our trip. The road...

After driving 600 km away from Krasnojarsk we crossed a river of Angara and finally started riding the winter road. 1000 km of "zemnyk" was full of white beauty, wild nature, cold nights and a couple of more truck failures. We met Oleg, a friend of Zilvinas in Krasnojarsk and he joined us together with his buddy Aleksandr. Now it's 5 of us traveling through cold taiga and experiencing peculiarities of "zemnyk". On the way to Bogucianai we stopped by Oleg's relatives and were warmly welcomed in their house. They live in the area, where lots of lithuanian relatives are left after exile. Because...

An incomplete list of truck failures

As we're going up North, our adventures continues. "Moderna", the company that prepared our truck for the trip, left us a lot of unpleasant surprises. Therefore, Giedrius and Zilvinas had not only to become a long-distance drivers but also resourceful mechanics. They were going all over the truck, diving in the fuel and looking for the ways to fix the bugs almost every day. After the flat tire was fixed the marathon of other failures continued. First of all the heaters of fuel pipes burned them and the fuel started to run through the holes under the truck. Giedrius and Zilvinas were taking a fuel...
